I'd long wanted to visit China, but the language barrier (particularly without a phonetic alphabet) gave me pause.  During the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year period) I had an opportunity to overcome this challenge: my friend Molly had been teaching English for half a year, so I figured that together we could navigate the Middle Kingdom.
